Well, birds are pretty smart creatures, despite their bird-brained reputation. Flying in a 'V', you see, conserves energy, since each bird flies slightly above the bird in front of it in order to reduce wind resistance. The birds take turns flying upfront, falling back when they tire. Another reason for this formation is that it is easy to keep track of every bird in the group.
